With b/w frontispiece, fine portrait in colours of Baron Ii Kamon-no-Kami Naosuké, and 3 double-page b/w plates; all plates tissue-guarded. – First edition of the biography of Baron Ii Kamon-no-Kami Naosuké (1815-1860) by Yoshimaro Sato (1857 -1934). Li Naosuke, eminent Japanese spirit and leader, statesman responsible for opening the doors to the world, and signing a treaty of commerce the ‘Harris Treaty’ with the United States. Li Naosuke was assassinated in 1860. – Silk on spine and hinges worn, boards firm, else a very well-preserved copy.
