30 x 23.5 cm. 70 pp. Hardcover. Illustrated in b/w and colour. – Text in English and Japanese – ‘HANAKO – Biomechalloid’ covers the time that this series began in 1985. Hanako was a large white chicken bred in Canada exclusively to efficiently lay eggs. Hata kept her in his studio, a room in a building, when she was 30 days old. In the course of a year he shot her in color and monochrome pictures, Hanako was beautiful, acting to make her presence felt. The presence of her as a ‘biomachine’ with the tip of her beak cut off, and laying 270 eggs a year, was a strong presentation of biotechnology as it related yo modern people. This presentation presented life in an invisible place, with human health, life and genes being controlled. [Satoru Yamamura] – Bottom edge a bit foxed, otherwise a good copy
